      Yale Law School Room 127
Ann Olivarius '77 first made history as one of the undergraduate plaintiffs in the landmark civil rights case Alexander v. Yale, one of the legal underpinnings behind American sexual harassment law in Title IX and impetus for Yale's first sexual harassment grievance board. Since graduating from Yale summa cum laude, Dr. Olivarius became the first person to complete joint degrees in the Yale Law School and the School of Management in 3 years, earned one of the first Rhodes Scholarships given to a woman, founded The Rhodes Project, and co-founded the prominent international law firm McAllister Olivarius. We are thrilled to bring Dr. Olivarius to campus to share how an open dialogue on sex can end abuse while enriching lives.

XXX Haiku Workshop: How to Write Hilarious (and Ethical) Shock-Value Comedy without Losing Your Soul
      WLH 203
Oakland's Tourettes Without Regrets has been the edgiest and most taboo-breaking variety show on the North American continent (and possibly in the world) for over a decade, garnering street cred and infamy on an international level for many of its regular performers. TWR's longest standing tradition--and perhaps its most celebrated--is its opening act: the XXX Head-to-Head Haiku Deathmatch, a battle of wit and strategy that transmutes shock comedy into artful, concise genius that leaves the audience groaning and begging for more. Tatyana Brown has won well over a dozen XXX HaikuDeathmatches across the country and currently holds the distinction of having the longest run as the TWR Dirty HaikuChampion (with 8 months of consecutive victories). In this 90 minute discussion and workshop, she'll explore the structure and content of successful XXX haiku, examine the line between "shocking with merit" and "pointlessly offensive," and provide useful guidelines for getting started composing your own dirty haiku. Students will have time to brainstorm and draft a few haiku and share them by the end of the class, and will also be prepared to participate in Head-to-Head Haiku matches in the future.

      Branford Common Room
Do the ways we seek relationships and intimacy adversely affect our friendships? Research shows that having non-romantic confidants is more strongly related to physical and mental health than romantic partnership, yet we still prioritize our pursuit of romance over friendship. Sociologist Lisa Wade will review cultural messages about friendship that undermine women’s ability to be friends with women, men’s ability to be friends with men, and men and women’s ability to befriend each other.

      WLH 208
Gail Dines, acclaimed anti-pornography sociologist at Wheelock College in Boston, feminist, and author of Pornland, explores how the porn industry's unabated expansion has seeped into many aspects of public life in a capitalist society, and argues that it is limiting our sexual imaginations and behaviors. Using examples from magazines, television, movies, music videos, and advertisements, Gail Dines looks at how these media images affect our ideas about the world and about our own lives, our relationships and our sexuality. Disclosure: Explicit images included.

Carol Queen: "Wisdom from Someone who Loves Sex to Someone Just Starting"
      WLH 119
Many elements of our lives can facilitate great sex, OR sex that isn't very pleasurable at all: the effects of good or bad sex education, role models, shame and harsh experiences, our ability to communicate. Pleasure activist and PhD sexologist Carol Queen explores these, and the paths to great sex she's traveled along the way, in an intimate talk for people of all sexual experience levels. Mixing details of her own journey with academic information and the insights of various sexuality communities, she'll look at the role of partnering and love, casual experiences, identity and affiliation, and of course learning solo. Bring your questions!
